Time is a child - playing like a child - playing a board game - the kingdom of the child. This is Telephoros, who roams through the dark regions of this cosmos and glows like a star out of the depths. He points the way to the gates of the sun and to the land of dreams.

INTRODUCTION

Based on some of Jung’s most profound work, this short course offers an introduction to some of the central discoveries formative to Jung’s life and work.

THE OBJECTIVE PSYCHE

The Unus Mundus: The Psychoid, ‘The one world of matter and non-matter’, ‘The oneness of all existence’

Mercurius as the archetype of transformation

The Serpent of Lumen Naturae which is the spirit hidden in matter.

In our times the Mercurial Serpent is the healing symptom of our neuroses, addictions, anxieties and complexes which point to the disassociation that needs to be cured.

The Uroboric Serpent becomes the mandala of conscious wholeness, the lapis.

Kundalini and the uncoiling of energy through different levels of consciousness.

(Reading: The Spirit Mercury; Dream-Work)

THE NEW CONSCIOUSNESS

The new consciousness is the archetype of wholeness, the healing of the age-old rift between the ‘dark’ and ‘light’ sides of the Self. This archetype is now demanding assimilation through the individuation process.

Some of the opposites encountered in our lives and dreams:

Matter and Spirit now experienced as the opposition between

Science and Soul

Masculine and Feminine

Tradition and Modernity

Persona and Shadow

Youth and Old Age

Individuation and Collectivity

Conscious and Unconscious

The Transcendent Function is the unified consciousness born out of the suffering and synthesis of the pairs of opposites, a new order of reality which emerges in our dreams, art, literature, music, and culture, and also in meditative states.

Some Indications of the New Consciousness are:

Science closes the gap with the mystery of the Unus Mundus.

Our boundaries of compassion are expanding to include other species.

The greed for the Midas touch is transformed into the longing for the gold of values.

The emergence of the Child Archetype in dreams and in the collective conscious.

(Reading: Aion, Visions Seminars; Dream Work)

ART AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Expressing the psyche in visual form, whether in paint, pen, or sculpture, creates a document that can also be read and interpreted by a therapist.

I will discuss the work of Susan Bach, a contemporary of Jung, who pioneered this technique. She worked in a children's hospital in Zurich and was able, through her interpretation of children's pictures, to advise doctors on future prognosis and courses of treatment. We will be showing visual examples of her work in the class.

ACTIVE IMAGINATION

Active imagination demands conscious involvement from the individual participant who remains awake while allowing a succession of images to emerge from the unconscious.

Originally the process involved the participant sitting calming with eyes shut, focusing on images that came to mind, following it wherever they might lead and however it might alter. Jung suggested that the participant should not only observe but also involve themselves in the drama of the imagination so as to integrate the contents of the unconscious. The process of Active Imagination may include drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, and dance.

ENVY

Little recognized as a motivation for hate and aggression, envy is a deep-seated pathology that spoils and destroys relationships both on the personal and collective levels.

According to Melanie Klein, envy originates with the mother who is perceived to possess something desirable which is being withheld. The infant then reacts with sadistic impulses to spoil what he cannot have. As an adult, the void created by envy can never be filled and the pattern is repeated continually.
