JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY September 2nd 2023

INTRODUCTION

The Advanced Course in Jungian Psychology explores a diverse spectrum of the theories and practice of depth-psychology as developed by C.G. Jung.

Jung combined a practical approach to life with a far-reaching interest in his inner world. This enabled him to look beyond the limitations of his time to discover the underlying reality of human nature and behaviour. He found this in the personal unconscious of the individual, and in the collective unconscious.

As Mircea Eliade writes in Myth and Reality,
‘The unconscious displays the structure of a private mythology. We can go even further and say, not only that the unconscious is ‘mythological’ but also that some of the contents carry cosmic values; in other words, that they reflect the modalities, processes, and destiny of life, and living matter. It can even be said that modern man’s only real contact with cosmic sacrality is affected by the unconscious, whether in his dreams and his imaginative life or in the creations that arise out of the unconscious (poetry, games, spectacles).’

Jung saw the psyche as part of nature, and balanced his psychiatric and therapeutic work with an involvement in the world around him - from growing his own vegetables and cooking, to building his tower at Bollingen. Above all it was his playfulness, good humour, and sensitivity towards others that characterized his personality and connected him to the world.

Towards the end of his life, Jung’s overriding concern was for the future of mankind. He felt that the only hope for survival would lie in an inner transformation that would bring about a corresponding expansion of consciousness. We will be working towards this goal through the study of the unconscious: instincts, libido, symbols, the power of archetypes, the Self, the transcendent function, and also the study of psychopathology including neurosis, depression, anxiety, and the relationship of the psyche to the body. Dreams, of course, will play a major part throughout the course.
